Most wheelchair repairs are preventable. A simple monthly check catches 80% of the problems before they strand you.

Tires and casters

Spin each wheel and listen. Grinding means a bearing; wobble means a loose axle. Pull stray hair and threads off the casters — they're the #1 cause of premature bearing failure.

Battery contacts

Pull the battery, wipe the contacts with a dry cloth. Any green or white corrosion gets a touch of dielectric grease.

Joystick and harness

Move the joystick through its full range with the chair off. Stiffness means dirt in the gimbal. Check the harness for cracked insulation where it flexes.

Frame and folding hinges

Tighten every visible bolt with the proper Allen key. Apply a drop of light oil to the folding hinges.

Brake test

Switch the chair off, push it. It should not roll. If it does, the electromagnetic brake needs adjustment — call the dealer.
