If a chair you're considering is missing two or more of these, it's last-generation tech being sold at this-generation prices.

Folding power chairs have evolved fast over the last three years. These six features separate a current-generation chair from a 2021-era design still on store shelves.

1. Lithium-ion (not lead-acid) battery

Non-negotiable in 2026. Lead-acid is three times heavier and roughly half the lifespan.

2. Airline-compliant battery (≤300 Wh)

If you travel at all, this matters. Most modern packs are 250–290 Wh — just under the FAA limit.

3. Sub-50-lb total weight

The threshold where a typical caregiver can lift the chair into a trunk without assistance. Carbon fiber chairs now go well below this.

4. Brushless motors

More range, less maintenance, quieter ride.

5. Solid (not pneumatic) puncture-proof tires

A flat tire on a powered chair effectively strands the user. Solid tires eliminate the problem.

6. One-step folding mechanism

Older chairs require removing the seat, folding the back, then collapsing the frame. Modern designs fold in a single motion in under 10 seconds.
