Major accessibility remodels are expensive and slow. A handful of smaller changes deliver most of the daily benefit in a weekend.

1. Widen the most-used doorway

Offset hinges add 1.5–2 inches of clearance without reframing the door. About $40 a door.

2. Replace round knobs with levers

Easier for arthritic hands and operable with a closed fist. $20 per door.

3. Threshold ramps everywhere
