Mobility Scooter vs. Power Wheelchair: Which Is Right for You?

Scooters look cheaper and friendlier — but they're not always the right tool. The five questions that decide which device fits.

Mobility scooters and power wheelchairs solve overlapping but different problems. The wrong choice costs you both money and independence.

Where scooters win

Outdoor distance, errands, and users who can walk short distances but not far. Tiller steering keeps the device simple and familiar.

Where power chairs win

Indoor maneuverability, full-time use, and any user who can't safely transfer or stand. A power chair's smaller footprint clears tight bathrooms and hallways a scooter can't.

Five deciding questions

  • Can the user safely transfer onto a scooter seat without help?
  • Will the device be used primarily indoors or outdoors?
  • Does the home have narrow hallways or tight bathrooms?
  • Will the user steer with one hand (joystick) or two (tiller)?
  • Is upper-body strength stable, or is it expected to decline?
